An Unveiling at Government House

The momentous announcement took place at Government House on October 16, 2023. It marked the official commencement of the Ministry of Energy’s proactive measures to tackle the pressing issue of rising gasoline costs.

Prioritizing Financial Relief

The core objective of this initiative is to provide significant financial relief to the general populace. The goal is to reduce gasoline prices to a level similar to or even lower than diesel prices, thereby ensuring that essential mobility remains affordable for all citizens.

Exploring Multiple Options

At the Cabinet meeting, the Ministry of Energy presented two preliminary alternatives. The first proposition focuses on offering support to motorcycle taxi drivers, in a manner akin to previous initiatives, with a monthly budget allocation of 95 million baht. The second alternative seeks to extend financial assistance to low-income groups, with a generous monthly budget allocation of 4,000 million baht.

Seeking an All-Encompassing Solution

While these initial options offer targeted support, Mr. Peeraphan expressed reservations, emphasizing the government’s commitment to comprehensive solutions. As such, he directed officials to develop a third option, aligning with the approach taken for diesel fuel. This comprehensive strategy will be presented to the Cabinet in the near future, further exemplifying the commitment to benefiting all citizens.

Addressing Structural Challenges

Beyond price reductions, the initiative also encompasses rectifying the structural issues surrounding gasoline prices. The Ministry of Energy is planning to establish a committee to thoroughly evaluate the intricacies of oil marketing fees and regulations, ensuring that the overall solution is both sustainable and all-encompassing. Should the private sector’s cooperation not meet expectations, the government is prepared to implement interventions to address these challenges effectively.
